The Beauty of Honey

By Ana Melissa Sanchez

There’s a lot love for honey and proof of it being great for the skin! Honey is full of antioxidants and flavonoids, is antibacterial, and soothes skin and prevents acne. In fact, honey has been considered medicinal for centuries and is a even used in Ayurvedic medicines to enhance medicinal values. (Note: Ayurdevic medicine is a holistic healing system that was developed in India more than 3,000 years ago.) I would recommend getting unfiltered, organic or raw honey if you’re buying some. Unfiltered honey contains more beneficial components.

It’s no accident that a lot of skin care boasts that it contains honey. It’s not just the delightful, sweet scent that they’re trying to advertise. Honey keeps skin moisturized and contains natural antioxidants--which are anti-aging. If you have acne concerns, honey can help with that too. We develop acne because there’s too much dirt and oil on the skin. Honey can absorb the build-up on your skin and naturally kills bacteria. If you’re having a tough time with your acne, I would recommend turning on some soothing music, putting on a honey mask after cleansing your skin, and laying down and relaxing for 30 minutes (stress could also be a major contributor to your skin’s state as well).

If you not only love having honey be a part of your skincare routine, but you’re also a big fan of sweetening up your teas and food, here’s how honey may benefit you internally. Honey can reduce swelling, prevent cataracts, reduce the risk of heart disease, relieve coughs and throat infections, tame gastrointestinal problems, and help those with diabetes.

Honey is definitely a miracle and will likely always be used and in demand. In fact, even something else the bees have is in demand. Their venom. Bee venom is considered nature’s botox. But unlike botox, bee venom can be absorbed through the skin. Applying a small amount of bee venom to the skin tricks the body into thinking it’s been stung, causing blood to be sent to the affected area. This stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, and body tissue is strengthened, which helps keep skin firm and youthful longer.

As always, I would like to recommend you reach out to a dermatologist before beginning any drastic skin regimen. Good luck!
